Aug 31st, 2010 by Andy Miles

Dell Streak Smartphone Android 2.1

Here comes an exciting news for all the UK customers who have been desperate about the availability of update to Dell Streak. The much hyped Android 2.1 upgrade to Dell Streak will now be out from O2 on September 1st.

The 5-inch Dell Streak Tablet-cum-Smartphone was released in the UK in June on O2’s airwaves with Google’s Android 1.6 OS. O2 UK is now all set to roll out the software update to Streak customers on September 1st. However, the device will be upgraded only to Eclair (Android 2.1) with this. To get the Froyo (Android 2.2) update, users will have to wait for some more time.

The Dell Streak is equipped with a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash having a front and back lens, a 5-inch 800×480 pixel screen and multitouch functions. The handset which is powered by 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor comes with an in built Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity along with 2GB of data storage and 30-pin docking connector.

O2 software update will bring an array of features including keyboard improvements, 720p HD video recording, multitouch gesture support and live wallpapers. Unfortunately, US customers are unlikely to get the Android 2.1 update and need to wait until later part of this year for the availability of Android 2.2.

8-Megapixel Nokia C6-01 information pouring in
Aug 30th, 2010 by Dipak Sarda

Nokia_Medium Nokia C6

Finnish Mobile phone manufacturer, Nokia is reportedly on track to unveil a new array of handsets very soon. Nokia C6-01 is one amongst them, which has already got leaked.

The C6 slider Smartphone launched last month runs on Symbian S60 5th edition platform. However, the new C6-01 handset would most probably be powered by the Symbian 3 platform. Rumours are agog that the yet-to-be-announced handset would come with enhancements like an 8-megapixel camera.

There is also quite a chance that the Nokia C6-01 would end up as a different mobile from Nokia C6-00. The Sliding QWERTY keypad might no more be there and the handset would apparently be a touch-screen phone.

Nokia has however made no other details available though there is a good chance that the official announcement could be out in mid-September.

For that matter, there is a good chance that Nokia would announce the handset in London at the Nokia World 2010 event on 14th of September.  And we need to live with the leaked details and couple of photos till then, thanks to Engadget.

The Nokia C6-01 would hit the shelves as a middle-rung device though we have no information about when it would hit the markets and at what price tags.

Qwerty phone for £45 from Alcatel
Aug 27th, 2010 by Andy Miles

Alcatel

Alcatel has for long championed the cause of price-worthy handsets and provided us with cheap and useful phones. And now, it is serious about offering a la BlackBerry Qwerty keypad phone for just £45.

The mobile phone comes powered with an optical trackpad, Web browser, FM Radio, 2 Megapixel camera, and 9 hours talk time apart from the Qwerty Keypad.

The handset is not for the high-end users who expect 3G or Wi-Fi as a prerequisite. It is however good for text messaging and calls, apart from slow web browsing. Social networking and emails should work, though.

A hip-hop looking Qwerty slider phone was released last week for just £30 and this new phone should serve as a great deal after that. Alcatel is happy to stay away from the Smartphone market and provide cheaper functional phones for the masses.

Alcatel phones are no lesser to counterparts from its competitors when it comes to functionality. The company looks forward to providing suave mobile phones which do not leave a big hole in your pocket. The handsets should however be able to help you in social networking, texting, MMS, and Image capture.

RIM BlackPad to Use QNX OS
Aug 23rd, 2010 by Dipak Sarda

Blackpad

The much-rumoured upcoming Blackberry tablet from Canadian manufacturer of BlackBerrys, Research in Motion (RIM) is said to be powered by the real-time OS, QNX rather than the BlackBerry OS 6 as per three separate sources close to RIM.

Bloomberg reports that BlackPad will be built using the embedded RTOS platform of QNS Software Systems, a company bought by RIM for $200 million from Harman International Industries in April 2010.

Coming to QNX, it is a microkernel-based OS supporting various platforms like ARM, X86, MIPS, PowerPC and shares common roots with Unix. By using QNX OS, RIM intends to differentiate itself from the iPad and keep the selling price as well as resource utilisation low.

However, there is no word if RIM will use parts of QNX in its next version of Blackberry OS or if two separate OS platforms will be managed. RIM hopes to give cutting edge competition to Apple with its BlackPad.

RIM which has already registered the Blackpad name acquired the domain name Blackpad.com. The BlackPad is expected to be launched in November. As per Bloomberg reports about the BlackPad specs, the device will sport a 9.7 inch form factor along with few iPad killer features.
