HTC Gratia on track to keep its UK release date
Nov 30th, 2010 by Dipak Sarda

HTC Gratia

HTC came out officially to deny the news reports that the HTC Gratia has been delayed and this should sound great because the UK release date is intact.

HTC Gratia was slated for rollout in November across Europe and though it got a little delayed, the handset has got shipped in some countries like Italy and Sweden. This was in fact the reason for some technology websites to claim that the HTC Gratia is getting delayed.

HTC confirmed that the UK launch is on track when TechRadar approached the Taiwanese mobile phone major for comments.

Gratia would however not come with the upgraded version of HTC Sense in all probability. Priced at €399 ( £335 ) in Sweden, the handset is quite expensive. The pint sized handset might not be able to match the HTC Wildfire, but we all need to wait and watch.

Unlike Nokia N8, which took almost 5 months to hit shelves after launch announcement, Nokia C6-01 hit the shelves swiftly, within a month of their announcement. Nokia made announcement about launch of Nokia N8 back in April and the handset hit the market at the end of September.

However Nokia C6-01 was announced in mid September and got ready to ship within a month of that announcement. Based on the improvised Symbian^3 platform, Nokia C6-01 is a good handset. Though the new Symbian^3 is definitely better than the old one, but still retains the same ancient look.

Tablet PC market will see Acer soon
Nov 24th, 2010 by Dipak Sarda

Acer LG Android tablet

Acer is all set to join the burgeoning Tablet PC market where we have seen announcements from bigwigs as well as smaller players joining the fray. Acer tablets will face a formidable challenge as they plan to enter the crowded tablet market to compete with Apple iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Dell Streak, and Next tablet.

The computer giant, Acer has decided this way after it saw threat to its laptop business from the tablets. Acer plans to release three tablets next year with screens between 7 inches and 10.1 inches. February 2011 should see the first of Acer tablets powered by Microsoft Windows and they would be followed up by Android powered tablets in April 2011.

Acer relied on netbooks for the last two years to grow its business s its Aspire One became a huge hit. It left behind Dell Inc. to become the second largest computer maker by computer shipments as HP topped it. Netbook sales are expected to fall, because of the tablets becoming a rage at the moment.

And to top it up, Acer announced plans to launch a 4.8-inch Android powered Smartphone and a dual screen laptop with two screens ( 14 inch each ) called as the Iconia Touchbook.

Now that there is an unending variety in the tablet space more and more people seem to catch up with them. How about you? Let us know.

BlackBerry PlayBook to arrive in Q2 2011
Nov 22nd, 2010 by Dipak Sarda

RIM Logo PlayBook

RIM has now confirmed the expected dates for arrival of the BlackBerry PlayBook in United States as well as the UK. While the US could get the tablet in Q1 of 2011, the UK could get the tablet in mid-summer.

Many of RIM executives have confirmed the dates as per reports and the BlackBerry PlayBook will be priced at £499 or around £315.

The much-rumoured upcoming Blackberry tablet from Canadian manufacturer of BlackBerrys, Research in Motion (RIM) is said to be powered by the real-time OS, QNX rather than the BlackBerry OS 6 as per three separate sources close to RIM.

Bloomberg reports that BlackPad will be built using the embedded RTOS platform of QNS Software Systems, a company bought by RIM for $200 million from Harman International Industries in April 2010.

Coming to QNX, it is a microkernel-based OS supporting various platforms like ARM, X86, MIPS, PowerPC and shares common roots with Unix. By using QNX OS, RIM intends to differentiate itself from the iPad and keep the selling price as well as resource utilisation low.

A dual-core 1GHz processor and twin cameras front and back helps the iPad target more of business users. RIM which has already registered the Blackpad name acquired the domain name Blackpad.com.

iPads to be cheaper, thanks to Orange and T-Mobile
Nov 22nd, 2010 by Dipak Sarda

T-Mobile Logo orange Android smartphones

Cheaper iPad deals are on the cards, now that Orange and T-Mobile confirmed that they are planning to rope in users into longer contract terms in the process.

T-Mobile was the first one to make the announcement which however revealed not too many details except a coming soon UK release with the new iPad plans. T-Mobile confirmed that the iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G will get cheaper when it is purchased with data service plans.

And Orange opted not to be left behind in the race and hence came up with a very similar statement to the press except that it replaced ‘T-Mobile’ with ‘Orange’.

As of today, people who buy Apple iPad for usage independent of the service provider get the iPad 3G by paying a huge sum and then they are forced to pay more monthly bills for the data usage on their favourite network.

The statements thus do not reveal too much; however if we take a leaf out from Phone 4 pricing, there is a possibility that the tablet could be available for £150 – £200 on a 24-month deal for a monthly contract of £30 – £35. And the price could be slashed further given the fact that there are no free minutes or texts involved in these plans.

This date however is specific to the UK and the other countries of the EU (European Union) will soon get to know the release date in their geographies.

The release planned using the Continue with Update button is in doldrums as the button is not yet working and is expected to work for Android 2.2 download with some tweak to the button. Streak Smart news releases should help you get to know more about these updates. Despite the fact that the updates are out, locked devices will need to wait till December for the Froyo.

Toshiba Folio 100 Tablet pulled out by Dixon’s UK
Nov 17th, 2010 by Dipak Sarda

Toshiba Folio 100

Dixon’s Retail, the UK-based consumer electronics vendor pulled out Toshiba’s Folio 100 tablet from its stores owing to high return rates. The Folio started getting shipped this month and now the tablet faces a big question mark over its future. The tablet has been pulled out from PC World stores as well as PC World’s retail website.

Dixon’s spokesperson confirmed the development and noted Dixon’s intent to avoid bad experience to its customers of a product which is actually very good. He also confirmed that they are working with Toshiba to resolve the issue very soon.

Toshiba Europe on the other hand had no clue about the reason behind high return rates though it is aware of the pullout by Dixon’s.

The 10.1 inch Folio is powered by Froyo, Android 2.2. With a powerful Nvidia Tegra chip including a dual-core ARM processor underneath, it also had a graphics core which can play HD video up to 1080p. Toshiba priced the tablet in the range of €399 and €529 (US$546 and $723) depending on the features.

Toshiba faces a stiff test as it gears up to put its tablet on track to compete with Apple iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Dell Streak and others. Toshiba confirmed that the tablet is not being launched in the US at the moment and that it has other plans.

HTC Legend sports Froyo, thanks to Vodafone
Nov 16th, 2010 by Dipak Sarda

HTC Legend Froyo

HTC started upgrading HTC Legend customers on Vodafone UK to Android 2.2 aka Froyo a week after it officially confirmed the move.

Despite the fact that the update got rolled out after the official launch, the decision to upgrade branded Legend phones before the unbranded ones sounded weird because HTC initially announced that the branded versions of HTC Legend were supposed to wait longer for the update than those with unbranded one.

Vodafone seems to be the only network on which the Legend update is being provided in the UK, Germany and France though this needs to be confirmed. Vodafone UK users using the HTC Legend need to check the updates area on their handset for the upgrade.

It was in spring 2010 that the HTC Legend got unveiled in the market with Android 2.1 onboard. Powered by a Qualcomm MSM 7227 600MHz processor, the handset has a 3.2-inch AMOLED capacitive TouchScreen with 320 x 480 pixels resolution to provide 16 million colours.

The HTC Legend has HTC Sense UI, 384 MB RAM, 512 MB ROM, a microSD slot for memory up to 32 GB, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, GPS with A-GPS, HSUPA, HSDPA 7.2 Mbps, and a 5-Megapixel camera with LED Flash and Autofocus.

Nov 14th, 2010 by Dipak Sarda

Samsung Galaxy Tab

Samsung Galaxy Tab widely touted as the South Korean technology giant’s reply to Apple iPad has slashed its prices by £50 to be made available for just £470 in the UK. The SIM-free unlocked version of the tablet PC was launched for £529.99 in the UK on 1st November.

The slashed price for the tablet was first seen at Dixons and Amazon followed the suit soon after to offer the tablet for £479 plus free shipping. Given the fact that Samsung had a 1 million tablet sales target, the price slash might help it achieve the feat.

The 7-inch Android 2.2 powered Tablet with a 1 GHz processor, touted as Samsung’s reply to Apple iPad weighs 380g and thus turns out to be easy on the pocket. Thanks to the dual cameras that it sports, the Galaxy Tab can handle video calls and it can be helpful for a lot of business use with it browser an email credentials.

A new content service named as “Media Hub” from Samsung.com will be offered access to the Galaxy Tab. Samsung wants to provide an overall digital experience to its customers by leveraging the new Media Hub. NBC Universal, Paramount, and MTV Networks partner the Media Hub along with Samsung.

The Media Hub shall offer a library of movies, along with new releases, full TV shows and television episodes.

Powered by Froyo aka Android 2.2, the Galaxy tablet has dual cameras thus allowing video chatting and it supports Adobe Flash 10.1 too thus highlighting the glaring differences from Apple iPad.

Palm Pre 2 offered only SIM-free in the UK
Nov 14th, 2010 by Dipak Sarda

Palm Pre 2 PAYG

HP announced the launch of SIM-Free version of the Palm Pre 2 mobile phone powered by the latest platform WebOS 2.0 this Monday. While the handset is being made available for £399 on its Palm website, reports reaching us point to the fact that none of the mobile service providers in the UK have plans to offer the handset on their palette.

HP bought Palm earlier this year and announced just a few days ago that it would launch the SIM-free version of the Palm Pre 2. Whether this was because of the UK operators’ decision to not offer the handset or not is unknown. This decision however should help the end users because they can hook on to any operator after buying the Palm Pre 2.

It was O2 which offered the earlier offerings powered by Palm’s WebOS in the UK, however the wireless carrier is not planning to offer the new device on its waves.

The excellent WebOS helped Palm build goodwill and this has set the tone high for the next launch. The Pre Plus released earlier this year with a 3.1-inch TouchScreen garnered eyeballs but it did not boast of WebOS 2.0.

The Palm Pre 2 has a conservative feel and covers Flash as well as HTML 5 and that should make people cheer. HP has noted that the WebOS 2.0 will enable software developers an open platform to integrate apps unlike Apple. Despite the entire craze about WebOS 2.0, what needs to be seen is whether the Palm Pre 2 can set the stage on fire given its 5 MP camera, 320×480 TouchScreen, 1 GHz CPU and a 16GB memory.

Motorola Defy being offered for £25 per month
Nov 14th, 2010 by Dipak Sarda

CarPhone Warehouse Motorola Defy

Carphone Warehouse is stocking the Motorola Defy which has got a rusty look and can withstand a rough day out and thus can be termed as ‘life proof’. The Defy exceeds the IP67 standard for dust as well as water can survive even if it is submerged in water for 30 minutes. The Motoblur featured device runs Android 2.1 OS and sports a 3.7 inch touchscreen, an 800 MHz CPU along with an on-board storage of 2GB.

Mobile phone maker Motorola had unveiled two new Android handsets, the Motorola Milestone 2, a re-incarnation of the Milestone handset and the other one is the all-weather Defy.

Both the devices run Motorola’s Motoblur, a tool which bundles messages, e-mail and social networking updates. They come with the Connected Music Player which allows song downloads as well as song lyric presentation in a karaoke style. Both the devices were expected to hit the UK market in Q4 as we reported earlier.

The Defy comes with HD video recording capabilities thanks to the 5-megapixel camera that it comes with. The handset is being offered for a monthly tariff of £25 and the handset comes for free from Carphone Warehouse.

White Galaxy S stocked by CarPhone Warehouse

Samsung Galaxy CarPhone Warehouse

For those who are contemplating a move from the Apple iPhone to the Samsung Galaxy S, the White Galaxy S being offered by Carphone Warehouse is going to help aesthetically for sure. The retailer has started offering the runaway hit Smartphone from Samsung for free coupled with a monthly tariff of £30.

This Android- based phone has an onboard storage capacity of 16GB which is expandable to 48GB. The other attracting features of this TouchScreen mobile are 4-inch Super AMOLED display having a resolution of about 480×800 pixel along with a camera of 5-megapixel and a Snapdragon 1Ghz processor.

Added to the above features, this Smartphone is the first Android based phone to provide HD video recording. The sad thing is that the phone would not be available with Google Chrome browser as was announced earlier by Vodafone. This Galaxy S Smartphone would run on the Android 2.1 OS.

The camera allows HD video recording and GPS as well. The handset also possesses Wi-Fi with DNLA certification for media streaming and a storage capacity of 8 GB.
