Apple’s FaceTime to be challenged by Skype’s iPad App
Jun 30th, 2011 by Dipak Sarda

Skype Apple_logo_Large

Skype has prepared ground to launch a dedicated app for video conferencing for iPad 2, the popular tablet PC from Apple. This app from the VOIP services provider will compete with Apple’s FaceTime.

Given the fact that Microsoft is acquiring Skype for $8.5 billion, it seems to be planning to keep up with Skype’s multiple services on various platforms. Skype is popular among individuals already and business customers can not be far away from being lured.

iPad users were so far left with no option but to use Skype’s iPhone version app and thus did not get some key functionalities. A dedicated app will now be able to leverage on the popularity wave and help iPad users get all of it from Skype.

Users will be able to make voice and video calls over 3G and Wi-Fi networks. There will be a camera swap feature so that users can use both the front and the rear end cameras.

Apple FaceTime in contrast lets users make video calls using Wi-Fi alone. Business users would in that sense find life easier with the Skype app using which video calls can be made using 3G network.

The app pricing and release date are not yet announced though many of us expect it to come free.

Two new tablets from Archos with optional hard disks
Jun 29th, 2011 by Dipak Sarda

Archos launched a new range of tablets called G9 with fast processors and optional 250GB hard disks. The first two tablets will go on sale this September for £199 and above.

80 G9 comes with an 8-inch screen while the 101 G9 comes with a 10.1 inch screen. The intriguing feature about this range is that you have the option to choose the storage medium between an internal flash drive and the hard disk.

A 250 GB hard disk comes with both the models while you will get 16GB and 32GB flash drives for the 80 and 101 models respectively.

The thickness of the hard disk models will be 2mm more but just imagine being able to store 40 full length HD films on your tablet. Though hard disks can make things a little slow at times, Archos is confident that the presence of a 4GB internal flash memory cache will take care of the speed.

The G9 range is powered by dual core 1.5 GHz processors while Apple iPad2 and Motorola Xoom are still lurking with the 1GHz ones. The OS is Android 3.1 to start with and upgrade to 3.2 is likely.

Though Wi-Fi is the primary connectivity option, the tablets have 3G USB Stick slots for an additional £50 so that you can use 3G with a PayG plan. Let’s wait to see how these tablets fare in the crowd.

Orange confirmed the news that it will sell ZTE Skate rechristened as Monte Carlo on its network and this offering will apparently be exclusive. Orange has put the handset on its “coming soon” page.

Orange has informed The INQUIRER that the dates and pricing are not yet decided. Orange had earlier sold ZTE Blade as ZTE San Francisco phone in a similar fashion. Monte Carlo can aim to be a better handset compared to the San Francisco as it is powered by an 800MHz processor plus the Android 2.3 platform.

The 4.3 inch touchscreen with 480 x 800 resolution is a lot better than San Francisco’s 3 inch screen. A 5 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and G-sensors are some other features of Monte Carlo. The handset is 10,mm thick and weighs 120g.

San Francisco is a budget Android handset and Orange sold it for as cheap as £79. Over 2 million San Francisco ( ZTE Blade ) handsets have reportedly been sold. We expect the pricing of the Monte Carlo handset to be competitive enough to appeal to all of us.

Google Maps out of iPhone 5 ?
Jun 24th, 2011 by Dipak Sarda

Google Maps Navigation iPhone 5

There are rumours that Apple is working on its own navigation software and thus taking steps towards moving Google Maps out of its iOS devices. As per PC Mag, the market has everyone talking about Apple developing its own geo-location system for iOS 5 though there is no clear hint from the software giant.

It was MacRumors who unravelled the story for the first time claiming that Macs app in iOS 5 has a section for third party licenses which can be used for providing geo-location service to the iOS.

Apple acquired PlaceBase in September 2009 and Poly9 in July’10 both of which are navigation service providers and these events only give wind to fire.

There is however contradiction in the recent announcement made by Google in May 2011 stating that they renewed their map and search agreements with Apple.

The inclusion of companies like Urban Mapping, TomTom, Localeze, and CoreLogic hints at the possibility of Apple working towards its own navigation software. Let’s keep our fingers crossed till the fog clears.

We need to wait till August to comment on success of the devices otherwise it will be conjuncture at this stage rather than a conclusion.

Padphone prototype from Asus
Jun 22nd, 2011 by Dipak Sarda

Asus prototype Padfone

Asus has recently unveiled twin devices, a 4-inch Android Smartphone and a 10-inch tablet display, as a prototype.

Both the devices are married to each other and like any other couple, one of them is dumb and the other active. The 4-inch Android based phone is the active device, which does all intelligent tasks, while 10-inch tablet is just a display extension to this cute little one. This tablet is basically a processor less device, the whole purpose of which is to only display contents of Smartphone hence needs larger screen. However it does have a front facing camera to support video calls.

Asus likely named this hybrid combo as Padphone and has unveiled it in Computex 2011, an event which happened in Taipei on Monday. The tablet has a docking station to dock the Smartphone, which provides this big brother with processing power to function through little one. With this docking station at the back of tablet, it looks bulky. Howevr, the combo is a good idea, where user can carry this device in the pocket, while keeping the bulky one in a backpack and can unpack, whenever there is a need for bigger screen.

Other than these technical details, not much information is available, except that it may be available in markets by Q4 of 2011. Let us wait for this combo to come onto retail shelves before we can comment on its acceptability.
