An announcement from HTC noted that the first tablet from its mantle will go off the shelf on May 9th in the UK. The gadget being touted as a rival for the Apple iPad2 is HTC Flyer.

Clove, Amazon and Carphone Warehouse have all been open to take pre-orders for the first Android slate from HTC. Though the cost of the 7 inch tablet is expected to hover around £600, the actual price will be set by the retailers.

The new tablet has been described as “compact with a seven-inch display, ultra-light, lightning fast thanks to a 1.5 GHz processor and high-speed HSPA wireless capabilities”. There is also a note taking app and the HTC watch service so that you can access movies anytime anywhere.

There are comparisons being done already for the Flyer with Apple iPad2. The Flyer has got a slim white aluminium case and so it looks just like the Apple iPad 2; however the 7-inch Flyer is quite smaller compared to the 9.7 inch iPad 2.

The Flyer thus might be the best thing to play games or watch videos whereas the iPad 2 can be better for use around the house. Powered by Google’s Android, the Flyer uses a customized version of the OS which was originally designed for SmartPhones.

This could also mean that the latest apps being built for Android tablets might not run on this tablet until it gets a software update. We need to watch out how people welcome this new gadget.
