Mobile phones under 20 quid flood the market
Dec 29th, 2011 by Andy Miles
Alcatel OT-209

Alcatel OT-209

The economy faces glaring uncertainties going into the new year and shoppers are being exceptionally careful on where they spend their money. This has lead to the return of the sub £20 mobile phones.

As smart phoneS took off around 4 years ago, so did the average price of mobile phones. However simpler models have now made a comeback. Leading the pack are Samsung, LG and Alcatel.

The Alcatel OT-209 is one such example. It is a simple phone that does its job, plus it has FM radio for music on the go. With bigger buttons, Alcatel seems to have stuck to the idea of making a simple phone, that is easy to use.

Mobile phones for under £20

Now grab the LG Optimus 2X for just £290
Aug 2nd, 2011 by Dipak Sarda

LG Logo

LG Optimus 2X, LG’s first Dual Core Processor based Smartphone created waves as the cheapest dual core smartphone available on the market after its availability being listed on Expansys for £299.95.

Additionally, you can still reduce this price by another tenner using the code EXP10. The original price of the Optimus 2X was £450 which shows a significant price cut of about 38 per cent.

This Android based super handset has many firsts to its credits. It is the first handset with dual core technology to be unveiled at CES 2011 in Las Vegas this year. This dual core technology makes LG Optimus 2X to be the first phone to support videos with a resolution of 1080 pixels, which any other single core based phone cannot support.

However, there are at least two features where the Smartphone does not quite fit the bill. The handset has just 512MB RAM and it sports Android 2.2 aka Froyo.

Coming to other specs of the device, it is powered an Nvidia Tegra 2 SoC clocked at 1GHz, Content Mirroring through its HDMI interface, 1080p HD video playback and recording along with a number of sensors. It also boasts 4-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen, DLNA compatibility, an 8MP camera with LED flash as well as a front 1.3MP camera, a 1600mAh battery, microUSB, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

LG Optimus 3D – a review
Jul 8th, 2011 by Dipak Sarda

LG Optimus 3D

Coming close on the heels of Nintendo’s 3DS is the release of LG Optimus 3D – the first mobile phone with a glasses-free 3D display.

The Optimus 3D is relatively chunky compared to Galaxy S2 sporting a massive 4.3 inch parallax barrier-covered display. The phone sports a special key for the phone’s three dimensional options – games, video and 3D options for the dual lens camera.

The 3D effect works pretty well – no great deal of crosstalk or ghosting, which is often the case with 3D displays. However, the down side is that the sweet spot for viewing the effect is extremely small.

There is no proper tie-up from the end of LG with any movie service. This meant that the available 3D films are restricted pretty much to trailers and You Tube’s 3D channel as of now.

The camera adds a bit of zing to the phone. There is a sense of depth in the videos but images are a bit dim. The best example of the phone features can be gauged from the pre-loaded games with the shooter NOVA 3D showcasing the added depth.

The overall feel is that the phone is a good model but the selling points are more gimmicky and less essential.

£25 contract can get you LG Optimus 3D
Jul 3rd, 2011 by Dipak Sarda

LG Optimus 3D

While we reported yesterday that Carphone Warehouse is selling the LG Optimus 3D SIMFree, we wanted to mention that the handset has been available on pre-order for a few weeks with many mobile phone retailers online.

The handset can be grabbed from buymobilephones.net on T-Mobile for £25.12 per month. The TCO (total cost of ownership) comes to £602 for a two year contract and you get unlimited internet, 500 texts and 600 minutes along with it.

The LG Optimus 3D which was unveiled earlier at MWC in February boasts an attractive 4.3 inch glasses-free 3D screen along with loads of many other fabulous features. The Optimus sports Nintendo 3DS-style 3D three-dimensional menus too.

It comes with 8GB storage and the power of a 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor. The Smartphone will come with Android 2.2 OS, which is likely to get Gingerbread update later. It also sports 5MP dual rear-mounted cameras which allow taking 3D videos to be shot in HD 720p.

The handset has a 4.3 inch WVGA capacitive display screen which allows you to watch 3D content without any glasses and the handset can also be used to display 3D content on any compatible monitor, projector or television given the fact that it has DLNA and HDMI compatibility.

LG Optimus Black to land in the UK next week
May 6th, 2011 by Dipak Sarda

LG Logo

LG Optimus Black is all set for a release sometime next week in the UK as per Pocket-lint. Though there is not much clarity Orange and T-Mobile seem all set to bet on Black. As Black does not really seem to be top class Orange is expected to offer it for free on some tariff plans.

T-Mobile meanwhile would follow Orange as they are one company now and it is expected to offer 300 texts and 300 minutes at the minimum.

LG Optimus Black is supposed to be brightest and most readable Smartphone than any other Smartphone available in the Market.

LG Optimus Black is Android 2.2 based Smartphone with interesting features. It is interfaced through 4 inch NOVA display which claims to provide optimum brightness and most readable under any sort of lighting conditions.

As per LG, it should consume 50% less energy when compared to other phones in the market, which should increase the battery life substantially. The phone is powered with 1 GHZ processor, which makes it to be fast enough and comes with a 5 Mega Pixel camera, which is capable of shooting HD quality video.

LG has first introduced this LG Optimus Black in Mobile World Congress in February, and consumers might just need to wait for a week to start using the handset.

Unless it is pitted against the mighty iPhone  4 or the Incredible S the Optimus Black is  a good pick with multimedia capabilities, decent camera and Android 2.2.

Optimus one 3 Mobile

3 UK came up with a better deal than those from T-Mobile for the LG Optimus One as it offered a 24-month contract for £15 per month.

The Internet Talker 300 tariff provides 500 MB internet, 300 minutes or texts, 5000 Three to Three minutes, unlimited Skype, Twitter and Windows Live Messenger usage, and free Voice mail. At this price slot, the handset has an array of competitors in the HTC Wildfire, the Nokia E5, and the Samsung Galaxy Portal.

The LG Optimus One is bundled with a 3.2 inch wide HVGA capacitive touchscreen, a 3MP camera, a 600MHz processor, a microSD card slot up to 32GB and a long lasting battery supporting up to 450 minutes of talk time.

LG to enter the Android tablet PC revolution
Jul 21st, 2010 by Dipak Sarda

LG Logo Android 2.2

2010 seems to be the year of tablet PCs. With the increased tablet PC boom, LG has also geared up to join the Android tablet bandwagon. LG plans to build a rival to the Apple iPad on the Android mobile OS platform. The tablet computer from LG which will be powered by Android 2.2 is expected to hit the market in Q4 of 2010.

Compared to other similar tablets on the market, this tablet is claimed by LG to deliver highly superior performance. It is also assured by LG that the new tablet will be powered by Google’s latest Android 2.2 OS. As of now, no price or other specifications about the tablet have been unveiled by LG.

The LG tablet will be supporting flash and multi-tasking. Although touch screen smartphones offer messaging and web browsing features, they do not provide fully functional solutions for business users. With the new 2.2 version, Android OS becomes an excellent choice for tablet PCs. As such, tablet computing will be taking off in a big way.

You need to wait for more details from LG before getting excited about the new device. However, users can expect a full multimedia experience featuring web browsing, integration of Google with maps, mail and navigation if the new tablet will run the Android 2.2 OS.

If LG intends to attract the consumers worldwide, then it has to come up with some definite details about the new tablet in the weeks ahead.

LG to join Android Tablet Bandwagon
Jul 6th, 2010 by Andy Miles

LG Logo

2010 seems to be the year of tablet PCs. With the increased tablet PC boom, LG has also geared up to enter the tablet PC revolution. LG is one of the several companies that are planning to come up with a tablet computer during 2010. The tablet is part of LG’s upcoming stream of 10 smart devices that will be revealed by this year end.

LG plans to build a rival to the Apple iPad on the Android mobile OS platform. The tablet computer which will be powered by Android 2.2 is expected to hit the market by this year end.

Compared to other similar tablets on the market, this tablet is claimed by LG to deliver highly superior performance. LG previewed UX10, the Windows 7-based tablet at Computex a month ago. As such, we need to wait and watch if the Android-based tablet is going to replace or compete with UX10.

Today, people are looking for a device having awesome battery-life, which can be turned on instantly, get connected easily and has an agile, touchscreen interface. However, we cannot find any of these factors on the existing Windows-based mobile computing platforms such as netbooks and notebooks.

Today’s trend is to build a tablet PC on the same mobile OS platform used in the smartphones. As such the new LG tablet will run on Android OS. No further details have been unveiled by LG about its Android tablet yet.

Till date, Apple has been leading the tablet Bandwagon by leaving its rival tablets in the dust. However, Apple’s rivals can beat the competition by launching tablet PCs having things like USB ports or Flash compatibility which are missing in Apple’s iPad.

LG Readies the GS290 Cookie Fresh Smartphone
Mar 10th, 2010 by Dipak Sarda

LG Cookie

The curtains are up for another budget touch-screen smartphone, the Cookie Fresh GS290 from the mantle of the South Korean manufacturer, LG. The original LG Cookie was successful and LG would expect this one to recreate the same magic in the market.

Starting April, the handset will be available in the UK. The handset has a 3-inch touch-screen WQVGA display, a 2MP camera and an FM Radio. Also loaded are social networking features like Facebooka, Myspace and Twitter. However the catch is that you will have to live with slower EDGE connection because of the absence of 3G (or WiFi) access.

Features like a 3.5mm headphone socket, Bluetooth, push email and a MicroSD card slot should help LG’s case. It will cost £100 on lauch via PAYG and will be available in 10 attractive colours.

LG has got another version of the Cookie Fresh in the pipeline (nickname GM360 Bali) which will have a 5MP camera and possibly 3G. In total, 6 models of the Cookie will be launched with the Fresh to be shipped to 50 nations.

LG has so far sold more than 12 million units of the original Cookie worldwide since its launch way back in November 2008.

LG KS360 Review

LG KS360 Blue
Review:

“Mobile Hub mobile phone of the month – December 2009″

LG KS360 lets you communicate with your friends in a quick and easy way. The Qwerty keyboard helps type out your messages a lot quicker than most mobile phones. The phone has been designed with messaging and email access in mind. The ability to access Facebook and Twitter at the touch of a button ensures that you never miss your laptop to meet your social networking needs.

LG phones are always very well designed and are guaranteed to look great. The phone inspite of its Qwerty keypad slips into your pocket or handbag very easily. The 2.4″ display is a great touch screen. You dont have to necessarily use the keypad to enter your number, the touch screen has it own on screen keypad. The auto rotate feature, a big pain with most big screened phones, works like a wonder on this phone.

The camera is a disappointing 2 mega pixel one. LG has let us down on this front, considering that they generally squeeze in high end cameras into most of their phones.

The FM radio is a handy feature providing music on the go.

The USB interface ensures you can transfer data (generally music) from your computer onto the phone. As far as connectivity is concerned the phone supports Bluetooth, EDGE, GPRS, GSM, USB and WAP.

The best bit about the phone is not its stunning looks, but the pricing. Priced at an affordable £60 pounds on pay as you go, one would not go wrong with this model.

LG GD510 Pop Review
Nov 14th, 2009 by Pai Solebille

LG GD510 Pop 2LG GD510 Pop 3LG GD510 Pop 4

Review:

LG, the South Korean conglomerate, has been one of the pioneers of the touch screen technology for quite a while now. The release of the LG GD510 Pop is set to keep their high standing in the market going.

LG has always tried to take the touch screen mobiles to the masses, rather than go in for the high end smart phone segment. The LG Pop for example is not expensive and is slotted in the low to mid range, as far as pricing is concerned. In terms of features it does punch way above its weight. The touch screen is a generous 3″ TFT. It looks sleek and ownable.

The LG Pop, follows in the foot steps of the highly successful LG Cookie. This means that all the basic features are included on the phone. It has a decent 3.2 mega pixel camera. This does both photos and video recording. The onscreen QWERTY is a treat to work on. This feature is nearly as good as the one on the Apple iPhone. The FM radio is a handy feature for those that want music on the move. If you prefer to carry your own music around, the memory (micro SD) is expandable to a staggering 16GB. That is enough space to fit in around 2000 MP3s songs.

The LG Pop however does not have the WiFi feature.

So all internet browsing will have to be done via the network providers package allowance.

The phone looks sleek. Weighing just 87 gms, it does neatly slip into your pockets.

Now for the important bit, pricing. It is priced just under £100 pounds, which is a cracking good deal for the features available on the phone.

Full Specification & Features:

  • 3 inch TFT touchscreen display
  • 3.2-megapixel camera with video option
  • Onscreen QWERTY keyboard
  • Internet browser
  • Bluetooth
  • FM Radio
  • Loud Speaker
  • MP3 Player

  • SMS
  • Dimensions 97.8 x 49.5 x 11.2mm
