Droid 2, unleashed by Motorola
Aug 11th, 2010 by Dipak Sarda

MOTOROLA LOGO Moto Droid 2

Verizon unveiled Droid 2, the successor to Motorola’s Droid which is Motorola’s biggest success in the Android market so far.

Next week will see Droid 2 on Verizon’s network and we will get to see if Motorola and Verizon can replicate the success that the original Droid achieved. Droid had been the most popular Android based Smartphone from Motorola’s mantle till date and it continues to be rated high amongst peers even after a year of its launch.

Despite the fact that there were other impressive Android Smartphones from Verizon like the Droid X, Droid is still popular amongst the business users who need to type a lot of text.

Motorola did not change much with respect to design, though Verizon chose a different colour scheme which made the Droid look aggressively styled with softer edges.

As Verizon runs on CDMA, the Droid 2 will need a change in radio so that it gets to Blighty. The Droid was rechristened as Milestone in the UK in the past for similar reasons and we can anticipate a similar renaming this time too.

Though the Droid 2 specs are not yet out, it is expected to cost $600 ( £380) without subsidy from Verizon. Droid 2 might get going next week and we need to wait and watch for its arrival in the UK.

ES400

Mobile phone giant Motorola has come up with its latest smartphone ES400 which is a business-centric handset. The smartphone which is based on Windows Mobile 6.5.3 is bundled with barcode scanning and signature-collecting features.

The ES400 is targetted at managers performing field or office related work tasks so as to deal with their responsibilities tactfully. It is said by Motorola at the launch of the ES400 that users are looking for business-centric phones rather than the user-friendly ones offered by Apple and Google Android. The handset includes exclusive MEUI so as to provide users with an enterprise-class customizable interface.

MEUI which has been specifically designed for more efficiency and speed offers comprehensive applications and functions such as home screen-centric business applications, direct access to applications, enterprise-class camera, single click activation of the bar code reader, etc. Motorola plans a 6 year life span for the device with ongoing updates and developments for 3 years. It will also offer dedicated support for 3 more years.

The ES400 Enterprise digital Assistant will handle multi tasking and run apps around a busy work day. The handset will provide you with 6 hours of talk time and 250 hours of standby time. It also supports local Wi-Fi so as to support push-to-talk function over a small distance.

Motorola predicts to sell around 2 million ES400 units in the first year of its launch and might get in pact with Vodafone, O2 and Orange carriers.

Motorola Android phones will have Bing
Mar 20th, 2010 by Dipak Sarda

MOTOROLA LOGO Bing

After the recent deal inked between Motorola with Microsoft, Bing search and mapping services will be made available on Motorola’s (Google) Android-based phones. While this comes as a blow to Google in the form of competition from Microsoft, analysts view it a little differently. There is common belief that Motorola is having alternatives in its bag, just in case Google wants to move out of China because of the recent issues in China about its search engine.

So, the new Motorola phones will have the Bing bookmark and the search widget pre-loaded. The first ones in the lot will be launched in China. On similar lines, Motorola struck a deal earlier to use Baidu as the default web browser instead of Google on Android-based Smartphones.

All this is happening with the background that Google is in a row with the Chinese government over censorship. While Motorola banks on Google’s Android operating system for mobiles, it has to take care of its business interests in the eventuality of Google moving out of China.

Motorola setting stage for sale of its Network Business Unit
Mar 16th, 2010 by Dipak Sarda

MOTOROLA LOGO

Motorola has cleared decks for a group demerger to list its Handset Unit and Network Infrastructure Business Units separately on Stock Markets from yearly next year.

From early next year onwards Motorola’s unit to manufacture radio equipment and network infrastructure for all emergency services will be working independently as a separate Business Unit. This will eventually clear all decks for company to sell off newly formed business unit. China’s Huawei Technologies is a probable suitor for the bid, which would be evaluated at $ 1 bn to $ 2 bn.

With its viable scale of business for a very long time, predictions are that it will be bought out by a larger rival. Huawei, Ericsson, Alcatel Lucent and Nokia Siemens network are among list of probable for the bid. Huawei is looking into this very keenly as it gives them a lever to enter into wider west market. Huawei also enjoys previous relationship with Motorola. Motorola and Huawei have entered into a joint venture in 2006 to manufacture Network Equipment based on 3G network. This deal will allow it to set foot hold on west market as a sole player.

Motorola to be committed to Android for 2010
Mar 9th, 2010 by Dipak Sarda

MOTOROLA LOGO Android

Motorola has delivered a series of devices powered by Android, Google’s mobile operating system and it is not yet done with it as there are a series of more such devices yet to be delivered in 2010. Motorola will also be offering some feature phones and chances are fair that it will launch a Windows Phone 7 series powered handset by 2010 end.

Excerpts from a recent article on pocketnow confirm that Motorola’s focus continues to be to deliver Android powered handsets for the rest of 2010 and that there is a possibility for it to come up with a handset for Windows Phone 7 series OS.

As might be known to most of you, Motorola was a Windows Mobile licensee earlier; however there is no clarity about its return to Microsoft’s mobile platform. The possibility of Motorola launching handsets powered by Windows Phone 7 OS cannot be written off given the fact that Microsoft announced the availability of the Windows Phone 7 powered handsets in time for the holiday season.

Motorola created waves in the market with the launch of Motorola CLIQ and Motorola DROID / MILESTONE handsets earlier based on the Android OS. Even as Motorola continues to focus on Android powered phones at the moment, its return to Microsoft’s mobile OS should not draw any flak. Microsoft has changed strategy and switched to focus more on the user experience with Windows Phone 7 OS.
