Nokia’s N900 to sport Linux-based Meego OS
Oct 16th, 2010 by Dipak Sarda

Meego Nokia N900

Nokia N900 users have a reason to smile as they will get to load the Linux-based Open Source Meego 1.1 platform on their handsets pretty soon.

MeeGo is a fusion of Intel’s Moblin operating system for MIDs (mobile internet devices) and Nokia’s Maemo operating system for smartphones and MIDs custom made to suit the systems which use Intel’s low-powered Atom chipset. Given the fact that Nokia is facing chin music because of its antique Symbian OS Meego might help Nokia get itself out. Community developers have helped Nokia to prop up its N900 Smartphone to be amongst the first devices to get Meego.

Meego has got many updates including GCC compiler, battery loading meter, Kernel, and Fennec browser. The project spokesman noted that work is on to iron out some bugs to deck up Meego 1.1 for N900.

Work on Maemo, the other Linux based OS is also on and a release of 1.3 is on the cards as per the spokesperson. One can dual boot the Meego and the Maemo OS on N900 and that might mean a lot more flexibility for N900 users.

Being a hybrid device from Nokia, the N900 was touted as the Pint-sized Tablet or the Internet Device and gained a cult status to itself though it did not translate into commercial success. Linux based OS, and development on C, Java and other such languages resulted in a pretty active community for N900.

No solution in sight for Nokia’s problems
Oct 3rd, 2010 by Andy Miles

Nokia_Medium Symbian Logo

After Sony Ericsson it is Samsung’s turn to drop Symbian OS Platform, which is no good news for Nokia and their Symbian OS platform. As a result most members of Symbian developers’ community are left with no option other than developing apps for other platforms like WebOS or Apple’s iOS or Android. WebOS is the newbie in the mobile world, which as per schedule will be launched by Hewlett Packard very shortly.

Samsung broke the news about withdrawal of support for Symbian platform on Friday (1st of October) and all the related reference content or any developer forums will be deleted by December 31st from Samsung’s official websites. As a final nail in the coffin, Samsung will not be certifying Symbian Applications anymore.

Korea based mobile manufacturer, Samsung also announced that they are developing their own Bada OS and is “No more interested” in Symbian OS Platform. Efforts in that direction are already on. The company’s labs are geared up for release of its new Windows Phone 7 and Android based Smartphones.

Simultaneously, plans are afoot for hardware to support its new Bada platform. With these back outs, prospects for Symbian seems to be very thin as all its one time loyal partners are dropping off.

Nokia N8 delayed yet again
Sep 21st, 2010 by Dipak Sarda

Nokia_Medium Nokia N8

Stephen Elop, the new CEO of Nokia had to postpone the launch of the much awaited Smartphone, Nokia N8 as one of his first decisions at the top.

It is the second time that Nokia has delayed the delivery of the top-class Smartphone Nokia N8. Nokia will leave its N8 pre-order customers high and dry as it announced that the customers can expect the N8 sometime in October.

The Finnish mobile major has tried all the tricks in the bag to play down the delay and boast of the disclosures as transparency. Nokia stated that it wanted to maintain transparency with its loyal customers who helped it bag a record number of pre-orders online. It also stated that the Nokia N8 shall reach the customers some time in October instead of the earlier end-of-September plan.

Given the fact that Nokia showed off the N8 at its World event in London last week, this delay is all the more surprising. The handset did not really create a big flutter after the show-off but people have good expectations from the handset, thanks to Nokia’s reputation.

N8 is the first and last N-series smartphone from Nokia based on Symbian ^3 operating system. To brief out about Nokia N8, it is bundled with a 3.5 inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display, a 12-megapixel camera with Xenon flash, HD recording, a mini HDMI slot, Ovi Maps, Dolby Digital Plus technology along with 16GB memory.

Will customers pardon Nokia for the delay and continue to support the phone maker because of its highly usable handsets so far? Let’s wait and watch.

Swype for Symbian now on Nokia Smartphones
Sep 3rd, 2010 by Dipak Sarda

Nokia_Medium Swype

Text messaging has never been as easy as it is turning out to be, thanks to Swype text messaging. Swype was available on select Android handsets only; however Nokia Smartphones can now get a hang of it.

The Beta version of Swype for Symbian platform is now available to Smartphone users with Symbian for S60 5th edition. In effect, it is the Nokia 5800, 5230, X6, N97, N97 Mini and C6-00 users who can experience the power of Swype.

Nokia has staked claims that Swype has seamless integration with all applications on the handset thanks to Symbian input method.

A continuous movement by one’s finger is all it takes to trace the path and recognize the word. The user is provided with options where there is lack of clarity and when you are in control of things, it should be possible to input above 40 words per minute.

Feedback is sought by Nokia from users across the board so that it gets to know the effectiveness and efficiency of Swype. Positive feedback is surely going to result in Swype being made available in more and more Nokias.

Nokia has got a 4 star rating so far from reviewers on the Nokia labs site. So, it is time Nokia users be game to the all new way of texting.

8-Megapixel Nokia C6-01 information pouring in
Aug 30th, 2010 by Dipak Sarda

Nokia_Medium Nokia C6

Finnish Mobile phone manufacturer, Nokia is reportedly on track to unveil a new array of handsets very soon. Nokia C6-01 is one amongst them, which has already got leaked.

The C6 slider Smartphone launched last month runs on Symbian S60 5th edition platform. However, the new C6-01 handset would most probably be powered by the Symbian 3 platform. Rumours are agog that the yet-to-be-announced handset would come with enhancements like an 8-megapixel camera.

There is also quite a chance that the Nokia C6-01 would end up as a different mobile from Nokia C6-00. The Sliding QWERTY keypad might no more be there and the handset would apparently be a touch-screen phone.

Nokia has however made no other details available though there is a good chance that the official announcement could be out in mid-September.

For that matter, there is a good chance that Nokia would announce the handset in London at the Nokia World 2010 event on 14th of September.  And we need to live with the leaked details and couple of photos till then, thanks to Engadget.

The Nokia C6-01 would hit the shelves as a middle-rung device though we have no information about when it would hit the markets and at what price tags.

Go Shopping with Nokia and Tesco
Aug 9th, 2010 by Dipak Sarda

Nokia Logotesco

Nokia lovers will be more than happy to know the Tesco Grocery app has been announced by Nokia on its Ovi Store. Using this application, Nokia users will be allowed to do online shopping of their groceries as well as other Tesco goods without any location constraint.

The Tesco Grocery app is exclusively available to the Ovi Store for a period of one month. Using this app, Nokia smartphone users can log into their account and then go with a delivery booking slot, viewing their favourites as well as placement of an order just the way they do on their laptop.

The Tesco Grocery app which works just like the online store on a laptop or desktop PC also allows the sharing of data between the two devices. Using this app, you can access all the functions of Tesco.com online shopping and the changes made will be synced automatically between your handset and your PC.

Things have been made very easy with the launch of the Tesco Grocery app. Tesco are targetting the busy Mums for their grocery app and will probably have one of the mainstream Nokia handsets for this app rather than an iPhone.

Also, the Tesco Clubcard app is being offered by the Nokia Ovi Store that stores your Tesco Clubcard details in a barcode form on your Nokia smartphone to be used at Tesco checkouts.
